LIGHT AND LACY PREEMIE BLANKET

Copyright Brenda Hanrahan, 2001.

Materials:  Approximately 3 ounces (85 grams) Baby yarn (I used Bernat Sparkle), crochet hook size G - 4.5 mm (I used a skacel hook).

Finished blanket measures approximately 22" by 17" [I used a soft baby sportweight yarn. The size varies, depending on how tight your stitches are; mine ended up squarer. This pattern is easier than it looks! (Patricia)]

Chain 84

Row 1:  1 dc in 4th chain, and in each chain across, chain 3, turn.

Row 2:  1 dc in 3rd dc, 1 dc backwards 1 dc making an X, *1 dc in 2nd de, 1 dc in 1st dc, rep from * across row, ending with 1 dc in last chain, ch 3, turn.

Row 3:  *1 dc between 2 sides of X, chain 1, rep from * across row, ending with 1 chain, 1 dc in last chain, chain 3, turn.

Row 4:  skip 1 dc *1 dc in chain after the next dc, 1 dc in chain before same dec, rep from * across row, ending with 1 dc in last chain.  Chain 3, turn.

Row 5:  dc in each stitch across, chain 3, turn.

Repeat rows 2 to 5 until desired length, ending with a row 5.

Finish off.  I did not feel that an edging was necessary on this blanket, but if desired, you could edge with single crochet. [I did that--it gives a firmer edge, and it's pretty.]
